“…he has poured out his Spirit…”

3 Aug

As part of my mission, I get to give tours sometimes at the Whitmer Farm in Fayette, New York, where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was officially organized in 1830 after being restored. One thing I’ve learned is that it is an incredible experience to stand in that little log home and read the Standard of Truth:

The Standard of Truth has been erected. No unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing. Persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished and the Great Jehovah shall say ‘The work is done.’                                        -Joseph Smith, Jr.

It is especially humbling in light of what was said recently at a meeting for those of us missionaries who are allowed to proselyte on the internet. We were told that just as airplanes were invented for the sole purposes of moving the Lord’s servants throughout the earth, so the internet was invented for the sole purpose of sharing the gospel. It’s pretty powerful, to think that this world-wide connection of thoughts and ideas was established by the Lord for his work, and that everything else that comes out of it is just a byproduct.

In 1926, Joseph Fielding Smith said:

I do not believe for one moment that these discoveries [i.e. radio, airplanes, electricity, medicine, etc.] have come by chance, or that they have come because of superior intelligence possessed by men today over those who lived in ages that are past. They have come and are coming because the time is ripe, because the Lord has willed it, and because he has poured out his Spirit on all flesh.

In the last 50 years, the technology of communication has progressed rapidly. Today, children are born with what would seem to be an inherent sense of this new technology and how to use it. Is it because they’re smarter than the older generation, which has to work to keep up? No. The Lord is inspiring us and enlightening the age to prepare for his coming.

It is astounding, to look at the way that the Lord fulfills his purposes. These are the miracles that we don’t recognize until we look for them, the witnesses to our faith that help us to understand a little more. I’m so grateful to be a part of this work, to be used as an instrument in the Lord’s hands, and to see that he is working to fulfill his promises to his children.

Doctrine and Covenants 58:64 “For, verily, the sound must go forth from this place into all the world, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth—the gospel must be preached unto every creature, with signs following them that believe.”
