General Conference!

30 Sep

The air is turning chillier, the rains are coming in, the leaves are changing colors. That can only mean one thing: General Conference is coming! I’m so excited!

For those of you who may not know, General Conference is the semi-annual meeting of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in which the modern Prophet and Apostles speak to the Church as a whole. It’s televised and broadcasted all over the world. You can even watch in online these days at lds.org. There are four different sessions, two on Saturday and two on Sunday.

Now, I have to admit, as a kid I was never this excited for Conference. I was more excited for the ice-cream sundaes my family has Saturday night between Conference days. But as I have grown to appreciate the wisdom and spirituality of the great and inspired men and women who speak, I have found myself more and more looking forward to the uplifting experience of listening to them.

The Lord has given us prophets to bring forth new scripture–new parables and new counsel for our day and time. In 1 Nephi 10:19 we read:

For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.

Just as prophets of old, like Noah and Moses, provided the word of the Lord to those who would listen, Thomas S. Monson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and other leaders of the Church provide our Heavenly Father’s message for us today.

If you want to find out for yourself whether President Monson truly is a prophet, and if his message really is the word of God, I challenge you to watch Conference this Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3. Pray about the messages and listen for the peace and joy of the Spirit to teach you that these things are true.
